Casual, comfortable clothes that you can move easily in are the best, suitable for the forecast weather conditions.  Be aware that it may be cooler on the water than on land.  Shoes may get wet and / or muddy, so leave the best ones at home.  Trainers, Crocks, sandals beach shoes or wellies are all fine.  Please avoid flip flops and sliders.

Don’t forget to include sun cream, sun hat, sun glasses or a raincoat as appropriate.

You do not need to wear wetsuits or similar,  they will be uncomfortable in a canoe.

Our regular trip up the Tamar doesn’t require any great athleticism, although you may feel that you have done some work at the end.  The trip is regularly undertaken by the very young, and the very not so young, and everyone enjoys it.  It is supposed to be a gentle and enjoyable trip not a race.

Don’t forget that there are always at least two people in a boat so if you want to take a breather for a few minutes and enjoy the trip, your crew member can still keep the boat moving forwards with the group.

Most of us are, essentially, waterproof, so the trip will go ahead in the rain.  Please bring a suitable coat and clothing.  If it is also very windy, that is slightly different as it affects boat control and we will make a judgment based on safety considerations.

Young children need to be at least four, otherwise they may find the confinement of the boat very challenging.

At the upper limit, if you feel that you are able to sit in the boat for 2 1/2 to 3 hours, and do some paddling along the way then you are welcome to join us.

Yes.  The heavier you are the more unstable the canoe will be, with a higher chance of a capsize.  If you weigh more than 18 stone (114kg) then our canoes are not for you, Sorry!

Having said that, if you weigh more than 18 stone, but have canoeing experience and know that you will be ok, then you are welcome to join us.

I am not promising anything, however it is very unlikely.  We have had one or two capsizes over the years but it is normally people standing up or involved in “splashing fights”.  You won’t capsize just paddling normally.

Calm and well-behaved dogs regularly accompany us and it always enhances the trip if you can share it with your four-legged best friend.  You need to be confident that your dog will be happy in the canoe for the duration of the trip.  Be aware that larger dogs, big labrador or bigger, are heavy enough to unbalance the boat if they move suddenly and you may not be comfortable having them in the boat with you.

Yes.  All paddlers wear a buoyancy aid which will ensure that you stay afloat whether you can swim or not.  And all our guides are trained and practiced in helping people back into their boats an a range of circumstances.

There are many disabilities which do not prevent you from taking part in canoeing or which can be accommodated to ensure you still have a great trip on the river.  Please contact us to discuss your particular circumstances and we will do our best to get you on the water.

Please be aware though, that some more severe disabilities would mean that the risks of taking someone out would be to high and we would have to say no.  We will always do our best to help but sometimes it is not possible.

Drunkenness and paddling are a no!  We will not let anyone into a canoe who we think is under the influence of alcohol. Think of it like drink driving—If you wanted to have a drink to celebrate a special birthday, for example, that would be ok, but we cannot permit any more than that.
